REPRESENTASI ASIMILASI ETNIS TIONGHOA DALAM FILM INDONESIA (Analisis Semiotik pada Film Ngenest) REPRESENTATION OF CHINESE ETHNICS ASSIMILATION IN INDONESIAN FILMS (Semiotics Analysis in the Film of Ngenest)
Abstract
This research is conducted to find out how representation of Chinese ethnics assimilation shown in the film of Ngenest. This film directed by Ernest Prakasa was released in the end of 2015. The film of Ngenest tells about a Chinese guy who felt the hard thing as a minority-born man in Indonesia and grew up in the period of New Orde government in which the discrimination still existed to Chinese ethnics, so that he became the victim of their Native friends' bullying. Then after, he looked for the way out from this discrimination and bullying.
The type of this research is qualitative research that uses the method of semiotics analysis of John Fiske in discovering the signs shown in the film of Ngenest through these levels that are level of reality, representation and ideology. In this research, there are three categories which become the researcher's discoveries, namely transparency of Chinese ethnics to Native ethnics, transparency of Native ethnics to Chinese Ethnics, and marital assimilation of Chinese ethnics to Native ethnics.
The result of this research is that the film of Ngenest is eager to show the forms of assimilation that is presented. The forms of assimilation from those three categories are able to present new stereotypes to the public between Chinese ethnics and Native ethnics through the forms of transparencies and marital assimilation presented in the film of Ngenest as the object of this research.
