Abstract
Background: Using computer had become a necessity nowadays. Computers were used among all ages to ease the work in all fields. Almost all institutions, colleges, universities, schools and even at homes, they were using computer regularly. Working infront of computer can cause bad effects to the body, one of that is eye related problem as known as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). One of that syndrome will be discussed at this study, dry eyes syndrome. Very little studies has been carried out to know dry eyes syndrome because of computer use among the college students. The research need to be done to assess the association of using computer with dry eye syndrome among engineering and medical students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta
Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among 165 college students, consist of 100 medical students and 65 engineering students. The participants were surveyed using questionnaires contain of health status, criteria of computer use, and also Dry Eye Questionnaire and Scoring System (DESS).
Result: The prevalence of mild dry eye syndrome among medical students are higher than engineering students (90%:73,85%) but moderate dry eye syndrome are higher in engineering students (26,15%:10%) it is due to taking break while working on computer less than 10 minutes (p= 0,045), the top of monitor at the same height of eye level (p=0,007), and also the top of monitor below the horizontal eye level (p=0,034).
Conclusion: Computer use weren’t associated with dry eyes syndrome among engineering and medical student in Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. Dry eye syndrome have high risk among engineering students caused by less to take a break while using computer, and the top of monitor at the same height or below the horizontal eye level.
