Abstract
Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a non-communicable disease with a high prevalence. The risk factors can be divided into two groups : modifiable risk factors (including healthy lifestyle), and non-modifiable (linked with genetic aspects). In one family, the whole member tend to share the same lifestyle. Hence, if one person is diagnosed with DM, the other members are also put in a certain risk of getting the same disease. Lifestyle itself is dynamic, making it subject to change through some conditions. In the process of developing a lifestyle, awareness has a key point. Thus, studying the relationship between those two aspects is necessary.
Methods :Cross sectional study is conducted on 1164 college student of UMY who took a health screening test in UMY Policlinic on 2016. The data was analysed with 2x3 table chi square test.
Results : Majority of respondents were aware of the absence of DM family history, yet a high number of unhealthy lifestyle were found. Of all respondents, most of them has an unhealthy lifestyle. With significance cut-off level of 0.05, p value was 0.606 (p > 0.05) which means there is no association between DM family history awareness and healthy lifestyle.
Conclusion :No relationship was found between awareness of DM family history and healthy lifestyle, whether in respondents aware of DM family history presence, aware of DM family history abscence, and unaware at all.
