RESPON PETANI TERHADAP PEPAYA VARIETAS CALLINA (CALIFORNIA) DI KABUPATEN MAMUJU, PROVINSI SULAWESI BARAT
Abstract
This study aims to find out the farmers’ responses towards the Californian
papaya and figure out the factors affecting the farmers’ responses towards the
Californian Papaya in Mamuju District, West Sulawesi Province. The selected
location of respondent sampling was Mamuju District since this place has once
reached the highest papaya production in West Sulawesi Province in 2008 although
it drastically declined in the following year. Respondent sampling was conducted
by taking a census toward 21 papaya farmers. In order to figure out the farmers’
responses, interval calculation based on the acquired scores from each papaya
farmer’s response indicators (knowledge, attitude and action) was carried out,
followed by descriptive analysis. Descriptive technique was used to find out the
factors affecting the farmers’ responses while correlation test was conducted to
figure out the relationship between those factors and the papaya farmers’
responses. The factors and the farmers’ responses were calculated by using Rank
Spearman. Results show that the farmers’ responses towards Californian papaya
in Mamuju District were fairly good, it can be seen from knowledge indicator
showing ‘fairly knowledgeable’, attitude indicator showing ‘fairly agree’, and
action attitude showing ‘very high’. Variable of education level, which is to be
correlated with the farmers’ responses, shows that there is quite strong positive
relationship; variable of recognition shows weak positive relationship, variable of
papaya cultivation duration shows weak positive relationship, variable of market
fluidity shows quite strong positive relationship, and variable of others shows weak
positive relationship.
