REPRESENTASI KEPAHLAWANAN AFRO-AMERIKA DALAM FILM THE KARATE KID
Abstract
The Karate Kid is one of those film that represent American heroism. The Karate Kid movie brings back the heroic portrayal of the African-American figures in which African-American characters usually only get a negative role and the role of antagonist or simply to a complement, but not in The Karate Kid movie. But Hollywood didn’t escape insert ideology in film maker. This ideology aims to distinguish the dominant classes and sub-ordinate. In this film stereotypes of China are represented as the bad guys and troublemakers. Hollywood as a superpower also establish it’s presence through postcolonial shown in this film as one form of colonization.
This experiment used method is in a model of Roland Barthes semiology analysis. Roland Barthes semiology models work by using two stages of significance, the meaning of denotations and connotations. The data in this film obtained directly by watching movies and looking for references from a variety of writing articles, books, internet, and more. While the results of this research data obtained based on the election scene in a movie that deals with the values of heroism. Value heroism in the film is assessed by reference to the elements of masculinity, behavior and background which is represented by a hero.
